Director Rituparno Ghosh's Kashmakash is the Hindi dubbed version of the Bengali movie Naukadubi, it is based on a short story by Rabindranath Tagore. It is social drama movie.

Story is set on 1921 in Bengal (of undivided India). Ramesh is a law student, who falls in love with his friend's sister Hemnalini. Hemnalini has a rich family and loving father.
Ramesh has been called by his father to his village, where his father has been fixed his marriage with the Susheela who is daughter of a poor widow. Ramesh is been emotionally convinced by his father and by would be mother-in-law. He married to Susheela, and when they were traveling through a boat in a river, a fierce storm arrives and boat capsizes in the churning water. Later Ramesh comes to sense in a deserted shore, at the distance of few steps he saw the newly wed bride. When he calls, bride open her eyes, then they both moved to their Kolkata's house.
Ramesh is still missing Hemnalini and so maintain a distance from bride. After some days, gradually he came to know that bride he taken with him in his home, is not his newly wed wife Susheela, instead she is Kamla whom he taken due to mistaken identity. Kamla, who is also a newly wed bride of a doctor named Nalinaksha Chatterjee.
She still thinks that Ramesh is her husband Nalinaksha. Ramesh decided to find Kamla’s husband and till then he will provide her shelter without letting her know that he is not her husband.
During this Ramesh decided to marry Hemnalini and met her. But Hemnalini family found kamla and thought that she is his wife. Ramesh is unable to handle situation and shift to Gorakhpur with Kamla. Hemnalini's heart has been broken, and she is very sad. Her father took her to kashi to help her forget the Ramesh. Their they met doctor Nalinaksha.
Then what happens tells the movie...
Will Kamla find that Ramesh is not his husband... what happen if she comes to know this...? What will happen with Hemnalini and Nalinaksha in Kashi…?

Movie is one time a classical period movie with its fascinating story of great writer Rabindranath Tagore, but other time its feel very slow with out-of-fashion love story.
Story unfolds very slowly, chemistry between Kamla and Ramesh haven't shown properly and have not developed.
Screenplay and direction is dull. However, performance of Raima Sen is very good, other actors’ performances feels very low at energy, or may be it was required in characters by story. Hindi dubbing voices and the presentation of story is extra soft and sweeter than required, which actually irritates a little.
If the chemistry between lead pairs has been developed a little, then film could have worked, and screenplay could have been engaging.

Though story is good and has a classical touch with its period movie status, but story is too slow, extra sweet, and chemistry between characters are under-developed. Performances are good from Raima Sen and rest of performances are OK, direction and screenplay is not very good.
It will like by fan of Rabindranath Tagore's stories, and classical love stories with social drama.
Do not expect movie to be fast paced, and new styled love stories.
Reviewer Verdict: It can be watched by the fan of classical period movies and fan of Rabindranath Tagore's stories, other can avoid the movie.
