Director Prakash Jha's Aarakshan is a social drama film. Prakash Jha who is reputed to made good movie about the thought provoking reality in society. This time Prakash Jha picks one of the very sensitive topics of Indian society Reservation or Aarakshan. Lets see will he justify the topic.
Prof. Prabhakar Anand is a principle of a college. He is very idealistic person. He
Personally helps the weak, poor and un-resourceful students. Deepak Kumar and Sushant Seth are his two favorite students. Prof has a wife and a daughter Poorbi who loves Deepak.
After the upheld of reservation to reserve category by govt. Tension between reserved
And non-reserved category students increases. Susant and Deepak who belongs to different category, fought on the issue. Prof When sees that and get angry on them.
Sushant alleged Prof that he is more close to Deepak and will never going against him, and Deepak alleged him for being castiest. Prof expelled both of them. Deepak and Poorbi also fight because of miss-behavior of Deepak to Prof.
Mithilesh is a new vice-principle of school who is more interested in his private coaching classes instead of college. Situations take turn and Prof has been force to take either of two sides from reserve and non-reserve category. He is made to make statement in a news paper, in which he states that he is with the un-resourceful students to help them. On which he is been criticized. Mithlesh and the trustees of college are not happy about it and they suspend Prof and appoint Mithilesh as new principle.
Then principle has to leave his official resident, and he moved to the house which he own. He found that house which he given to his friend for helping them, is given on rent to Mithelesh for running his Coaching classes. Due to legal problem Prof could not able to take back his home.
Now after being cheated by those who he helped, his values on which he was working his whole life that is to help needy people being challenged.
What happen then tells the movie...
Will he change his values after getting cheated... or he will come out as stronger in his values... Or he will able to find a third solution of the problem...
It is a well delivered and strong movie. Without offending either of reserved or non-reserved categories, director presents both sides views efficiently.
It is also one of the films being miss-understood by many after the film 'Gandhi to Hitler'.
Many people see it as that first half and second half of movie is completely different and not related with each other. But it actually is much related and presents a strong idea.
Professor’s idea of helping non-resourcefull students when challenged, then he comes up with a new idea which can be very well explained by the song of movie 'pee lo baanto hai sab ki roshanee' in movie. Matter of coaching classes only serves a mean to present that idea and to present another issue of coaching classes.
Film says social differences between both parties can not be solved by reservation alone,
And movie at last presents idea that solution to the problems which actually raised the need of reservation is to helping each other irrespective of community and family, not only to ones immediate community and family.
Performances are very strong from Amitabh, Saif, and Prateik. Direction is also very good. Screenplay is good and engaging. Both part of movie is good, first half presenting the views of both categories without offending anybody, while second half presents one of the solutions of problem.
What good in movie is its good direction, strong performances, engaging screenplay, very good story, socially meaningful and thought provoking story. While, film does not explicitly tells the relation between first half and second half can be said a bad point of movie.
It would be liked by fan of meaningful, thought provoking, and social message movie.
Reviewer Verdict: It is a must watch movie.
