Rating: ***1/2

Director Rakesh Ranjan Kumar's Gandhi to Hitler is a cult movie. It is also released with name Dear Friend Hitler in English. Movie shows clashes of ideologies of certain influential persons at the time of World War II. Movie based on letters written by Mahatma Gandhi which addressed to Hitler. It is also said to be inspired from 2004 German movie Downfall.
Film however based on 2 actual letters written by Gandhi which addressed to Hitler. But it has its fictional element also. It is not known that letters which was written by Gandhi was ever sent to or received by Hitler. And weather Hitler ever written or sent any reply to Gandhi. Film is one of the most miss-understood movies in Indian and International fronts.
Film shows primarily the clashes of 3 ideologies and their fate. First is ideology of most effective, influential, and intellectual leader of non-violence movement of Indian Independence, The Mahatama Gandhi. Second is ideology of most effective, influential, and intellectual leader of violence movement of Indian Independence, The Subhash Chandra Boss. Third is ideology of German dictator Adolf Hitler.
Film does not glorify Hitler's Ideology. In fact it shows uselessness of his ideology. But it also try to shows human face of him during his Downfall (which is might be fictional or guessed through human psychology which anyone faced during their downfall).
Film also shows Hitler's support to Indian Independence (violence movement of Indian Independence). But it never glorifies it. It never deviate from the fact that Hitler's support Indian Independence only for his own immediate benefit during his Downfall and probably do not have his heart in his that action.
Film shows how the Gandhi ideology was better among the three and eventually wins.
Film set during the World War II, Hitler receives 1st letter from Gandhi in which he tells how his friends insisting him to write to him and request Hitler to stop the War.
Some Soldiers of Ajad Hind Fauj who do not like much the non-violence ideology of Gandhi and chooses to follow violence ideology of Bose for Indian Independence. They support Hitler in expectation that he will later help them to gain Independence of India. After down falling they are now on run with their only dream to reach their homeland India and to their loving families.
Hitler is being betrayed by his soldier during his down falling.
Hitler then receives 2nd letter from Gandhi, in which he tells that Gandhi has no doubt about his obedience to Germany, but his ideologies and methods are non-human, useless, and should be condemn. On which film shows that Hitler replied to Gandhi with telling that he is not the only one who is responsible of war, war has been imposed on him, and his actions are merely a part of whole power game being playing in whole region.
Film then shows which one of 3 ideologies was right and why. And which ideology eventually wins in last...
Direction is good. Rakesh Ranjan if not completely than at least partially, is successful in showing the 3 ideologies. Performances of actors are good. However, at some places character of Hitler become over melodramatic.
Movie however is one of the most misunderstood films. Most persons feel it glorifies the Hitler, which is not true. However, film shows just opposite point that is how Hitler's ideology was useless. Many people are just not able to digest the fact that Indian actors have played the characters of Germans, however most people do not object when American or British actors played the part of Germans.
What good in movie is, it is successful, in showing the clashes of 3 ideologies. Performance, direction, and story are good.
What bad in movie is, though it is based on some true things but it has some Fictional part in movie also. Film feels slow at some places.
Film will be liked by those who like meaningful cinema and who are fan of Gandhi’s ideology.
Do not take seriously the parts of Hitler, film only shows his downfall and uselessness of his ideologies.
Reviewer Verdict: Film is a must watch, but it is also very necessary to get aware of realities. And understand the difference between reality and fiction in story.
