Director Robert Lieberman's Speedy Singhs, which is also released in English with the name Breakaway, is sports and family drama movie. It is a story of struggle of a young ice hockey player for making his position and deals with his traditional Indo-Canadian Family. It also stars Russell Peters who is internationally famous Indo-Canadian comedian, actor and disc jockey. This film is produced by popular actor Akshay Kumar with Canadian producer Paul Gross.
It has been said to inspire from other sports films like Patiala HOuse, Chak De India, Iqbal etc.
Rajveer Singh is belonging to an NRI Indian family living in Canada. He is a young talented ice hockey player. His father Darvesh Singh prefers trucking over the ice hockey game. He do not have objection on Cricket but have objection on ice hockey game, because it is not popular in India. His cousin Reena is marrying Sonu. Sonu do not leave any oportunity to make fun of Rajveer because he like to takeover the business of Reena's father Sammy and Sammy have promised to give his business to Rajveer.
Rajveer with his other Canadian Sikh players believe that they play like Childs and as desi's they have no chance to play professionally. They made a team Speedy Singhs under the guidance of Coach Dan Winters to play professionally. Rajveer have love interest with Dan's sister Melissa Winters. Dan and Melissa are both are ethnically Canadian.
What happens then, tells the movie...
Will Rajveer plays in team in spite of his father objection... Will team able to play professionally as ice hockey players...
Film has nothing new to offer, and have a very predictable story. But still it is an enjoyable movie with nice family drama, sports enthusiasm, and comic scenes. Film has some good characterization of characters.
Rajveers relationships with his younger brother Guruveer Singh and brother-in-law Sonu are funny and lovely. Melissa and Rajveer's romantic pair and their relations are also enjoyable and fresh. Melissa is also a lawyer and genuinely supports Rajveer and team.
Film could have been much better if more focus would have been given on sports, and Rajveer's relationships with Sonu, Melissa, his team, his brother, and his family, rather the religious sentiments.
Russell Peters works as Sonu is very limited in film, and he have done average job. Akshay Kumar is doing a special appearance in movie as himself.
Bad points of movie are its predictable story which serves nothing new, while some good points of movie are its good characterizations of various characters, good performances of actors, good direction, good camera work, and good and interesting projection of ice-hockey game.
It would be liked by fan of sports, NRI-based, fun family drama movies.
Do not expect any new thing in story.
Reviewer Verdict: It is a watchable movie.
