Director Aparna Sen's Iti Mrinalini is a cult movie. It released simultaneously in Hindi and Bengali language. Aparna Sen and her daugter Konkona Sen Sharma both portrayed the same character Mrinalini Mitra older and younger woman respectively. This film is about the life and journey of a film actress. It shows film politics, love, accident etc which she evident in film industry.
Older Mrinalini Mitra has an affair with much younger director Imtiaz Chowdhury, in whose film 'Born of the Sun' she is acting. After pledging the role of lead actress of his next film to Mrinalini, role is given to a much younger actress at premier show. After being betrayed, she decided to do suicide at that night. Before do suicide she starts to destroy evidence and signs of her life one by one in chronological order, to protect them to be obtained by media. And with this she starts to remind her life.
In her youth, Mrinalini had an affair with naxal Abhijit, but he is killed in a police encounter. Mrinalini get the offer of film 'Rajni' from a director Sidharth. She then became an established actress and worked in many films of Sidharth. Mrinalini and Sidharth get involved in love affair with each other. Sidharth is married but he claimed that he do not share close relationship with his wife. They decided to marry and have a child.
Then what happens tells the movie...
Will they have child and how it affects on his first marriage...? How Mrinalini met with Imtiaz...
Will Mrinalini suicide ultimately...
Film tells the story of a film actress. It shows politics, lives, acting skills etc within film industry. Film seems quite boring and slow. It does not appeal to wider viewers, but it appeals to the section of viewers who are related to or interested to in the film industry.
If thinking with the aspect of wider viewers its rating should be low, while if think with the aspect of film industry appealing viewers then its rating should be much higher.
Bad points of movie are its slow, have very simple style, and story, which do not appeal much the mass viewers. While good points in movie is its good direction, performances, and very appealing to its target viewers.
It would be liked by fan of film industry based movies.
Do not expect it would entertain the mass viewers and fast paced story.
Reviewer Verdict: It is a must watch movie for fan of film industry based story movies, other can avoid this movie.
