Director Sohan Roy's Dam 999 is adventure and sci-fi drama movie. Film is also released in 3D format. This film is based on award winning short documentary film ‘DAMs - The Lethal Water Bombs’. This film is also based on the Banqiao dam disaster of China in 1975 that claimed to took lives of 250,000 people. It also shows anticipated climatic breakdown of outdated DAMs in India and world. It is a joint project of India and UAE. Film also claims to depict 9 moods concept in old Indian drama philosophy, which are called as Navarasas. Film is banned before its release in Tamil Naidu state of India because of political party DMK is concerned for their claims that film is based on 'Mullaperiyar Dam dispute' between Tamil Nadu and Kerala states of India, and film may disturb the controversial disputed matter.
Two mariners Vinay with his diabetic son and Captain Fredrick Brown with his wife come back their hometown after many years. Vinay have problematic marriage and when he met with his childhood love interest Meera after a long time, he found that they still have a spark between them despite their doomed relationship predicted by Vinay's father who is expert in Vedas and ayurveda. Durai is evil politician of the city who is heading the new Dam created in city, he have taken a huge amount of black money for production, and this result in Dam of poor quality. Vinay's wife came back to village for win back his husband and feels sorry for her past mistakes. She is also covering the Dam project for media. One night Dam shows leakage, it is predicted to be break and take flood inside the city.
Then what happen tells the film...
Will flood result into a great disaster in their life... Who will Vinay choose his wife or his childhood love interest Meera...?
Film shows beautiful story of small Indian village with their own values and system. All the stories of each character in movie are good. But screenplay and direction does not engage in film. Film seems very flat, and lack enthusiasm in film. Director seems to so engage to fit different concepts like Navarasas concept, different stories of each character, politics, natural disaster, that he lose the execution of these things in film with some entertainment and enthusiasm.
Good points of movie is its different good stories, and its noble concern about dangerous old Dams, but bad points of movie is its screenplay, average performances, direction.
This film will be liked by fan of disaster movie and traditional Indian values.
Film should not be compared with other good disaster movies otherwise it will result into disappointment
Reviewer Verdict: Film is just a time pass movie, and can be avoided, if people are not much interested in its central theme of movie that is flood disaster through weak Dams.
