Director Kiran Rao's 'Dhobi Ghat' is a drama movie. Kiran Rao is wife of Aamir Khan, a famous actor and director of Bollywood. This film is her directorial debut, while she has worked as assistant director in many other successful Bollywood films.
Arun who is successful and up-market artist comes to live in a flat in older part of Mumbai. He meets to Shai but their relationship does not go further because Arun does not believe in relationships and he loves to live alone. Shai is an NRI investment banker; she comes to Mumbai for her photography hobby. She met with Munna, a washerman (dhobi) for picturing him while working. Munna is inspired to become actor. Munna starts to like Shai. Arun found the video tapes of Yasmin, earlier inmate of flat. He gets inspirations and obsessions with videos while watching her videos.
What happen next tells the movie...
Will four of them with their own story and nature affect each other...? What happen of Munna and Shai...? What is in videos of Yasmin which effects life of Arun for forever...?
Film shows beautiful story of four main characters of different background and dreams. Each one of them has different experiences and different stories in their perspective which is very different from the other’s story in their perspective, and yet get effected from other stories. Meetings between all of them affect them forever. Arun is loaner by choice and found his new inspiration as videos of a newly married lady who loves to live in happy company. Shai is girl who wants to finish the unfinished story between her and Arun, and while doing so, she is taking photograph of Munna as a hobby. Munna is a waterman, and he have passion for acting and he is happy in the company of Shai. It is the story of Yasmin which affects the most; her story becomes very life full through her video tapes. She is newly married lady who is sending video messages to her brother; she is expressing her experiences in the Mumbai city. Director Kiran Rao once said that Mumbai city is the fifth most important character of film. Film shows the less explored lives and soles of Mumbai city, with its different colors.
Performances in film are very good, direction is also excellent. But this is not a usual masala Bollywood entertainer and it do not have big filmy turns, but each character get emotional shock of life by the turns in movie towards the end of it.
Good points of movie are its different story, with great performances, direction, and cinematography. While some bad points of film are it however give a strong impression to its viewer but it do not entertain like the usual Bollywood masala movies.
It would be liked by fan of excellently directed films and the intense emotional character-driven films.
Do not expect any heavy story with usual Bollywood masala entertainment in movie; just watch it for its good performances, direction, and life changing experiences of different characters.
Reviewer Verdict: Film is watchable film, while it is must watch film for its excellent direction for section of viewers professionally inspired or related to movies world.
