Director Imtiaz Ali's Rockstar is musical and romantic drama movie. Director Imitiaz Ali is back with Rockstar, he is no doubt a legendary director in Bollywood with his movies like 2007 Bollywood movie 'Jab We Met' which broke all financial and critical records and 2009 Bollywood movie 'Love Aaj Kal'. Actor Ranbir Kapoor is working in this film as lead actor, who is another living legend, who have given the outstanding performances in film like 2009 Bollywood movie 'Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year' and 2010 Bollywood movie 'Raajneeti'. Also legendary singer Mohit Chauhan is also singing in the film, and music director 'A. R. Rahman' also working in this film who don’t need any introduction. With this entire great director, great actor, great singer and director, expectation with film is already high. Music and songs of film is already famous and chart buster. Songs like 'Sadda Haq', 'Jo bhi me kahna chaahu', 'katiya karu' are already very famous. Let’s see how this film actually works.
Janardhan Jakhar aka Jordan aka JJ lives in Delhi and study in Delhi University. His only dream is to become big and famous rockstar singer like Jim Morrison. But his peer group and locality take him and his music as a joke. His college canteen head suggest him that all the big music rockstars have one thing in common that they were in love and they have faced the tragedy. Jordan with this suggestion starts to woo his college's famous girl Heer. Heer is kashmiri Pandit girl who is studying in Delhi University. Then his journey to become big rockstar begins.
Then what happens tell the movie...
What will happen with that Jordon's romantic interest which began with a joke...? What will be the fate of this love interest...? Will he became a famous rockstar as he always been dreamt... Do being a rockstar is really cool as Jordon dreamt...
Rockstar is a beautiful story of a man search for his freedom, love, and passion. It took you to a journey of a music rockstar, his music, his tragedy, his love all portrayed with very good way. The film is based on the music theme, so music of film must be good, and music is successful in grabbing attention of the youth. Music is youthful and humable. Ranbir Kapoor has given outstanding performance, even debutant Nargis Fakhri has also given good performance, and she also looks pretty in movie. Imtiaz Ali also yet again proved that he is great director, and done very good job. One weak point of movie can be it do not give any strong social message and it may not liked by very traditional people and culture crazy people. But Imitiaz Ali once said "... The purpose of the movie is not to make any social message, its more about personal freedom rather than a geographical issue”. So, film is more like a journey for search of personal freedom and love. If film like Rockstar and Rocket Singh do not financially success, then it is not the failure of film, but it is failure of film goers. However, this is not the case of Rockstar, it is already getting huge success. It is highest first day grosser after Ready in non-festival session release. Film is little longer, but it keep you engage and u will not complain for its length. Overall watching Rockstar is like experiencing a thrilling journey. It try to give you experience that do life of Rockstar is really so cool as it seems. First half of movie is good for devotion of Jordan for to give identity to his passion and unconventional romance sequences. Second half Jordon is giving great performance on stage but blank and tragedy in heart. And in climax, again Jordon is seems to get his love life straight, and towards the good fate, but will it last long.
Good points of movie are its outstanding performances by lead actors, great direction, very good music & songs, good story, script, screenplay, good camera work. While bad points of movie can be it do not give any strong social message, film is little lengthy (however you really do not complain about it).
It will be liked by fan of films of story of breakthrough journey of a person, unconventional love story, good performances, direction, and music.
Reviewer Verdict: If you are not very traditional kind person and rock music not always irritate you, than this movie is must watch.
